Zal ik doen, bedankt.
Wie is (of was) Jean-Marie Bouw, wonend toen in Hoeilaart, Overijsesteenweg?
I have been doing a lot of research into the gang for the last 3 years as it is an extremely gripping topic. I have read a lot of posts and painstakingly translated books. This is truly a maddening and mind blowing crime spree. I bring up this case often and it's just as mind blowing very few in America have ever heard of it. I looking for advice related things context. Is there anything that I should really know to understand these tragic events as a non Belgium person?
Even for Belgians it's hard to grasp. You should understand the backdrop against which all of this happened: 2 police forces who were essentially at each others' throat, economic crisis and drug trade that took off and was countered by the introduction of 'American' crime fighting strategies for which no legal framework existed in Belgium.
The result was that a number of high-profile cops became criminals or were controlled by criminals. Coupled with almost inexistant forensics procedures this set the scene for criminal excesses that went unpunished and were not really investigated as in many cases, criminals had some dirt on the detectives that were investigating them.
What exactly does forced labor entail? Also, I was kinda confused about Buslik getting the death penalty. I couldn't find a lot of recent information about the death penalty in Belgium.
The death penalty existed in Belgium until 1996 when it was formally abolished. However, the last execution of a common law criminal was carried out in 1918 (decapitation), the last execution under martial law in Belgium occurred in 1950. (Belgian colonies in Africa were a different matter).
When a death sentence was pronounced, it automatically got commuted to life in prison (which usually means anything between 10 years and effectively until death occurs).
Buslik got sentenced not to death but to life in prison in absentia, back in 1995. Not surprising as he wasn't there and no defence was presented so essentially the jury followed the prosecution's case. Totally different matter when he was retried in 2000 and found not guilty due to the prosecution having to admit that they couldn't prove their case.
Imo he got away with murder.
Thank you, it cleared up a lot relating to that matter
