I feel the story about how the killer was shot during the getaway helps give reason as to why the attacks stopped. A reason why over time it has been repeated as a high possibility by the investigators is it gives an explanation without having to provide anything of substantial meaning.

That really interesting about the possibility of something going wrong and the robbery not going to plan it could provide an avenue for some answers. The question is if it related to the killer being shot but that is even up for debate. The robbery in Aalst seems to have a lot questions that are very frustrating to answer because the little bits of information that feels like it could go somewhere.

How is that a wrong observation?

Since I started reading more about the gang I too have became more convinced that it is highly unlikely that it is the same people during each of the attacks.
